Ed Murphy earned a B.S. in Astronomy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Virginia. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow and research scientist at Johns Hopkins University on NASA's Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer mission before joining the general faculty at the University of Virginia in the Department of Astronomy in 2000. In addition to teaching introductory astronomy for non-science majors, he teaches a College Advising seminar and teaches a graduate seminar class on astronomy education and outreach.
