October's spotlight is on GFC member Ibby Roberts, Senior Lecturer, Music Department (Basoon)
What do you do at UVA? I am Principal Bassoon in the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia, and the UVA Faculty Woodwind Quintet (Albemarle Ensemble). I coach Woodwind Chamber Music (Rotunda Bassoon Ensemble), and teach Bassoon Lessons as well as teach Bassoon Sectionals for the Orchestra. I also serve on committees.
Professional duties outside of UVA? I am the Director of Youth Education for the Charlottesville Symphony; I am Contrabassoon for the Virginia Symphony, and Second Bassoon for the Williamsburg Symphony. I freelance Bassoon and Contrabassoon (Philadelphia Orchestra, National Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Washington National Opera), I am a private Bassoon Teacher, and on the Faculty at New England Music Camp (Sidney, Maine).
Favorite TV show or Movie? Star Wars
Favorite superhero/fictitious character? Captain Kathryn Janeway, Star Trek
Favorite book? The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho
Favorite music? J.S. Bach's "Chaconne" from Partita No. 2 for violin in d minor, BWV 1004, performed by Arthur Weisberg on the bassoon
Something on your bucket list? Retire in Scotland, and own and farm with sheep and border collies.
Finish this sentence: "When my students graduate from UVA, I hope they have learned from me..." To set lofty goals and find creative solutions to things others might tell them are impossible.
